Moving Forward on NHS Pay

Pay UNISON News

A little over three weeks ago I wrote to all our members in the NHS. Tens of thousands of you responded.

Nearly 9 out of 10 of you supported a campaign for an early NHS pay rise.

That’s a powerful message from you. We had to act.

Today, we have written to the Prime Minister asking for an immediate commitment to pay talks.

Along with the other NHS trade unions we are calling on the government to act by:

  • Recognising the importance of tackling vacancies across the NHS
  • Delivering a deal that reaches members’ pockets before 2021
  • Integrating an NHS pay deal into plans to boost local economies
  • Guaranteeing additional funding for employers

This is just the first step. You gave us a strong message to start this process as early as possible so when our lead health committee, made up of NHS staff just like you, met this week they decided to move quickly.

You also demonstrated strong support for a £2,000 pay claim. We will take this into discussions with the other 13 NHS trade unions in our efforts to agree a joint pay claim which we hope to do in the next few weeks.

I’ll keep in touch and let you know when we are ready to launch the detailed pay claim and when we have a response from the Prime Minister.

And be assured – we will seek your views before we come to any final decision on anything the government might offer.

I thank every single one of you for your courage, commitment and hard work during this crisis. You make me proud to be UNISON’s head of health. I and my team will continue to work equally hard to deliver you the early pay talks you deserve.

Head of health
