We have updated our privacy policy and introduced a new cookies information page due to the introduction of the new EU cookie law (e-Privacy Directive) The law which applies to how you use cookies and similar technologies for storing information on a user’s equipment such as their computer or mobile device changed on 26 May 2011 and became enforceable in 2012. The law specifies ‘implied consent’ which basically translates to you agreeing to the use of cookies if you continue to use a website. It is not strictly necessary to place a pop up banner on our website asking you to give permission for cookies to be used. You can adjust your browser to accept or decline cookies and more information on how to do this is shown further down the page. Our new revised cookie information is published below to make you fully aware of our policy.

Granting us permission to use cookies

If the settings on your software that you are using to view this website (your browser) are adjusted to accept cookies we take this, and your continued use of our website, to mean that you are fine with this. Should you wish to remove or not use cookies from our site you can learn how to do this below, however doing so will likely mean that our site will not work as you would expect.

To fully understand the implications of this you need to be aware that when we refer to ‘the site’ this includes all of the websites operated by the London Ambulance Service UNISON Branch. Some parts of our website are in fact stand alone websites of their own such as our news pages and blogs. Turning cookies off would therefore be likely to affect different parts of our site in different ways.

More about our Cookies

Website Function Cookies

Our own cookies

We use cookies to make our website work including:

  • Determining if you are logged in or not
  • Remembering your search settings
  • Allowing you to add comments to our site

There is no way to prevent these cookies being set other than to not use our site.

Third party functions

Our site, like most websites, includes functionality provided by third parties. A common example is an embedded YouTube video. Our site includes the following which use cookies:

Disabling these cookies will likely break the functions offered by these third parties

Social Website Cookies

So you can easily ‘Like’ or share our content on the likes of Facebook and Twitter we have included sharing buttons on our site.

The privacy implications on this will vary from social network to social network and will be dependent on the privacy settings you have chosen on these networks.

Visitor Statistics Cookies

We use cookies to compile visitor statistics such as how many people have visited our website, what type of technology they are using (e.g. Mac or Windows which helps to identify when our site isn’t working as it should for particular technologies), how long they spend on the site, what page they look at etc. This helps us to continuously improve our website. These so called ‘analytics’ programs also tell us how people reached this site (e.g. from a search engine) and whether they have been here before helping us to know where to put more money into developing our services for you.

We use:

Advertising Cookies

Cookies are widely used in online advertising. Neither us, advertisers or our advertising partners can gain personally identifiable information from these cookies.

You can learn more about online advertising at http://www.youronlinechoices.com . You can opt-out of almost all advertising cookies at http://www.youronlinechoices.com/uk/your-ad-choices although we would prefer that you didn’t as ultimately adverts help keep much of the internet free. It is also worth noting that opting out of advertising cookies will not mean you won’t see adverts, just simply that they won’t be tailored to you any longer.

With the exception of a few select UNISON affiliated adverts, the only section of our website that actively uses advertising banner ads is the LASUNISON.NET e-mail service. This is a free service provided to our members and activists and in order to keep it free we do allow advertising on the site. In order to avoid this then we advise you do not use this part of our website.

Banner Adverts

We fund our LASUNISON.NET e-mail site by showing adverts as you browse the site. These adverts are usually managed by a partner specialising in providing adverts for multiple sites. Invariably these partners place cookies to collect anonymous data about the websites you visits so they can personalise the adverts to you, ensure that you don’t see the same adverts too frequently and ultimately report to advertisers on which adverts are working. Our partners include:

DoubleClick – Privacy Policy owned by Google

Turning Cookies Off

You can usually switch cookies off by adjusting your browser settings to stop it from accepting cookies (Learn how here). Doing so however will likely limit the functionality of our’s and a large proportion of the world’s websites as cookies are a standard part of most modern websites

It may be that you concerns around cookies relate to so called “spyware”. Rather than switching off cookies in your browser you may find that anti-spyware software achieves the same objective by automatically deleting cookies considered to be invasive. Learn more about managing cookies with anti-spyware software.
