UNISON To Suspend Strike To Enter NHS Pay Talks Wi UNISON To Suspend Strike To Enter NHS Pay Talks With Government.

The Government Has Finally Promised Extra Investment In Pay For Both This And Next Year.

The strike planned for next Wednesday involving thousands of ambulance staff and other NHS workers has been suspended to allow UNISON to enter pay talks with the government, the union said today (Friday 3 March).

Following a meeting of its health committee this afternoon, UNISON announced it was suspending the action scheduled for 8 March.

The decision was taken after the Department of Health and Social Care confirmed there would be additional investment in pay for both this year (2022/23) and next (2023/24).

UNISON head of health Sara Gorton said: “Unions said all along they could pause strikes if ministers would only commit to formal talks to boost pay for this year.

“The government has finally promised extra investment in pay for both this and next year.

“The sad thing is this could all have been handled so differently. Proper pay talks should have started months ago, long before the first strike was called. That would have avoided days of disruption for the NHS and its patients.

“Whether the talks signal the beginning of the end of the current dispute will emerge in the coming days. If a deal can be reached, strikes can end and everyone can work together again to ensure the NHS gets back on track.

“However, when we get in the room, we’ll quickly learn whether the talks can be meaningful. If not, UNISON will be forced to resume strike action. Nobody wants that.”

Both GMB and the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy have also suspended their action and will join the NHS staff council talks.
Mythbuster: NHS Pay 10 Ways In Which The Governmen Mythbuster: NHS Pay
10 Ways In Which The Government Is Distorting The Truth In The Ongoing Dispute Over NHS Pay
As UNISON members prepare for a fifth day of strikes in England on 8 March – with thousands more health workers preparing to join the action – the government stubbornly refuses to engage in talks with all the health unions or to consider improving its miserly pay award.

And all the while, Rishi Sunak and his ministers peddle the same lies and misinformation, to distract from their simple failure to do the right thing. UNISON policy officer Guy Collis applies a scalpel to some of their worst fictions.

Myth: Increasing NHS pay will fuel inflation
Fact: Economic organisations such as the International Monetary Fund have found little evidence that raising pay will lead to the “wage price spiral” that conservative commentators fear. The real crisis is in pay and living standards, which not only directly affects health workers but, by reducing workers’ purchasing power, also damages local economies and the UK’s wider growth prospects.

Myth: The government does not have the money for bigger pay rises
Fact: Figures show that the government recorded a budget surplus of more than £5bn in the month of January 2023. In addition, government borrowing is currently £30bn less than predicted by the Office for Budget Responsibility. So the money is there; it just needs government to make health workers its priority.

Myth: All parts of the economy are having to accept cutbacks in the current crisis
Fact: Recent weeks have seen huge profits reported by banks and energy and oil companies. For example, British Gas owner Centrica reported record profits of £3.3bn, while BP and Shell combined to make an eye-watering £55bn in the past year. So while some firms are making money from the spike in energy costs, NHS staff and other workers are left to pay the price. In addition, bankers’ bonuses are once again set to run into billions, regardless of performance.

Call To Take 12 Hour Strike Action – Friday 10th Call To Take 12 Hour Strike Action – Friday 10th February 2023
Dear UNISON Member,

I am writing, as Branch Secretary, to call on you to take strike action again in line with our national NHS pay & Staffing dispute.

To increase pressure on the Government we are calling on you to strike for 12 hours.

We have had, very successful turnouts on the last 3 industrial action dates and I am confident that we can have an even better impact and show of solidarity on the 10th.

FRIDAY 10th February (11.00-23.00)
UNISON calls on all members to join the action.
Exemptions and ‘Life and Limb’ cover arrangements will be agreed with the Service and will be sent out to every station and workplace. Your local UNISON Representative will be updated.

This is not a dispute against the LAS, but against the unfair, divisive pay & staffing policy of the Government. We have to have our voices heard. This is about the future.

This is a serious call to action and I hope as many UNISON members will support it.

If you are not on duty come in and support the picket lines.

More information will be sent out soon. Thank you all very much.

Eddie Brand
